When to sing: On Diwali night after Lakshmi–Ganesh puja, on Dhanteras, on Fridays, Sharad Purnima and during the Vaibhav Lakshmi vrat.
About Om Jai Lakshmi Mata
On Diwali night, after the diyas are lit and the Lakshmi–Ganesh puja is done, this is the aarti that fills Hindu homes. Om Jai Lakshmi Mata is sung to Goddess Lakshmi, giver of prosperity, in the same tune as Om Jai Jagdish Hare, so even children pick it up quickly.
The aarti praises Lakshmi as the mother of the world, worshipped even by Vishnu, the Sun and the Moon; as the goddess who brings every virtue into the home where she lives; and as the treasure who rose from the ocean of milk among the fourteen ratnas of the Samudra Manthan.
Meaning of the aarti, verse by verse
Om Jai Lakshmi Mata: Victory to you, Mother Lakshmi. Tumko nishdin sevat, Hari Vishnu Vidhata: Vishnu and Brahma serve you day and night.
Uma, Rama, Brahmani, tum hi jag-mata: You are Uma (Parvati), Rama (Lakshmi) and Brahmani (Saraswati); you are the mother of the world. Surya-Chandrama dhyavat, Narad rishi gata: The Sun and Moon meditate on you and the sage Narada sings your praise.
Durga roop niranjani, sukh sampatti data: In your pure form as Durga, you give happiness and wealth. Jo koi tumko dhyavat, riddhi-siddhi dhan pata: Whoever meditates on you receives abundance, accomplishment and wealth.
Tum paatal-nivasini, tum hi shubhdata: You dwell even in the netherworld and you alone give what is auspicious. Karm-prabhav-prakashini, bhavnidhi ki trata: You reveal the fruit of our actions and carry us across the ocean of worldly life.
Jis ghar mein tum rahatin, sab sadgun aata: The home where you live gains every virtue. Sab sambhav ho jaata, man nahin ghabrata: Everything becomes possible, and the mind is never afraid.
Tum bin yagya na hote, vastra na koi pata: Without you no sacrifice could be performed and no one would have clothes. Khaan-paan ka vaibhav, sab tumse aata: All the richness of food and drink comes from you.
Shubh-gun mandir sundar, kshirodadhi-jata: You are the beautiful temple of every good quality, born of the ocean of milk. Ratna chaturdash tum bin, koi nahin pata: Without you, no one can obtain the fourteen treasures.
Mahalakshmiji ki aarti, jo koi jan gata: Whoever sings this aarti of Mahalakshmi, ur anand samata, paap utar jata: their heart fills with joy and their sins fall away.
When and how to sing it
On Diwali (8 November 2026), sing it after the Lakshmi–Ganesh puja, once the main diya is lit, following the Ganesh aarti. On Dhanteras and every Friday evening, sing it after lighting a ghee diya before Lakshmi’s picture, then keep the diya burning at the door. Many families finish with Om Jai Jagdish Hare and share kheel-batashe as prasad.
Frequently asked questions
When is the Lakshmi aarti sung?
Om Jai Lakshmi Mata is sung after the Lakshmi–Ganesh puja on Diwali night (8 November 2026), on Dhanteras (6 November 2026), on Sharad Purnima, on every Friday and during the Vaibhav Lakshmi and Varalakshmi vrats.
Should Ganesh aarti be sung before Lakshmi aarti?
Yes, in most homes. Ganesha is always worshipped first, so on Diwali families sing Jai Ganesh Deva first, then Om Jai Lakshmi Mata, and often close with Om Jai Jagdish Hare.
What does "ratna chaturdash" mean in the aarti?
It refers to the fourteen treasures (ratnas) that rose from the churning of the ocean of milk, including Lakshmi herself, the moon, the wish-granting cow and tree, and amrit. The line says none of them can be had without her grace.
