About the Saraswati Vandana
Millions of Indians learned Ya Kundendu in their first school assembly, hands folded, before the day’s lessons. It is the classic prayer to Goddess Saraswati, goddess of knowledge, music and speech, describing her as white as jasmine, the moon and snow, dressed in white, holding the veena and seated on a white lotus: the one whom Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva themselves revere.
Meaning, line by line
Ya kundendu tushaara haara dhavala: She who is white as the jasmine flower, the moon, snow and a pearl necklace; ya shubhra vastraavrita: who is dressed in white.
Ya veena vara danda mandita kara: Whose hands are adorned with the veena; ya shveta padmaasana: who is seated on a white lotus.
Ya Brahmaachyuta Shankara prabhritibhir devaih sada vandita: Who is always worshipped by Brahma, Vishnu (Achyuta), Shiva and all the gods.
Sa maam paatu Saraswati Bhagavati nihshesha jaadyaapaha: May that divine Saraswati, who removes all dullness of mind, protect me.
Shuklaam Brahma vichaara saara paramaam aadyaam jagad vyaapineem: I bow to the white-robed one, the essence of the highest knowledge, the first one, who pervades the world; veena pustaka dhaarineem abhayadaam: who holds the veena and the book and grants fearlessness; jaadyaandhakaaraapahaam: who dispels the darkness of ignorance.
Haste sphatika maalikaam vidadhateem padmaasane sansthitaam: Who holds a crystal rosary in her hand and is seated on a lotus: vande taam Parameshvareem Bhagavateem buddhipradaam Shaaradaam: I bow to that supreme goddess, Sharada, the giver of wisdom.
When and how to recite it
Recite it before study, an exam, a music lesson or a performance, with hands folded before a picture of Saraswati. On Basant Panchami, recite it as part of Saraswati Puja with yellow flowers and a yellow sweet, and let small children write their first letters. In the south, it is sung on the ninth day of Navratri when books and instruments are placed before the goddess.
Frequently asked questions
Where does Ya Kundendu come from?
The first verse is the traditional dhyana (meditation) shloka of Goddess Saraswati, recited at the start of study and in many schools' morning assembly. The second verse, Shuklaam Brahma Vichaara, is often sung with it. Both are in Sanskrit.
When should the Saraswati Vandana be recited?
Before study or an exam, at the start of a music or dance lesson or performance, at school assemblies, on Basant Panchami (Saraswati Puja), and on the ninth day of Navratri when books and instruments are worshipped.
What does "nihshesha jaadyaapaha" mean?
It means "the one who removes dullness completely". Jaadya is sluggishness of mind, the inertia that stops us from learning; the prayer asks Saraswati to take all of it away.
