What the Hanuman Chalisa is

The Hanuman Chalisa is forty short verses in praise of Lord Hanuman, written by Goswami Tulsidas in the 1500s. It is probably the most recited prayer in North India today. Grandparents know it by heart, children learn it before they can read, and lakhs of people say it every Tuesday in temples and homes.

Its power is in its simplicity. The Chalisa tells the whole story of Hanuman’s devotion to Lord Rama in forty lines, and then asks him, very directly, for strength, wisdom and freedom from fear.

Meaning of the Hanuman Chalisa, in simple words

Opening dohas. Tulsidas begins by cleaning the mirror of his mind with the dust of his guru’s feet, so he can describe Rama’s glory truthfully. Then, calling himself weak in understanding, he asks Hanuman for bal, buddhi, vidya (strength, intelligence and knowledge), and to take away his troubles.

Verses 1–10: who Hanuman is. Victory to Hanuman, the ocean of wisdom and virtue, known in all three worlds. He is Rama’s messenger, the son of Anjana and the wind god, with a golden body, earrings and curly hair, holding the thunderbolt mace and a flag. He is learned, clever and always eager to do Rama’s work. He showed himself to Sita in a tiny form, burned Lanka in a fearsome form, and destroyed the demons in a mighty form.

Verses 11–20: what he did for Rama. He brought the Sanjeevani herb and saved Lakshmana’s life, and Rama embraced him, saying, “You are as dear to me as my brother Bharata.” Even the gods and sages cannot fully describe his glory. He helped Sugriva become king, and Vibhishana followed his advice and became king of Lanka. As a child he swallowed the sun, thinking it was a sweet fruit; carrying Rama’s ring in his mouth he crossed the ocean. Every difficult task becomes easy by his grace.

Verses 21–30: what he does for us. He guards Rama’s door, and no one enters without his permission. Whoever takes shelter in him finds happiness and has nothing to fear. Ghosts and evil spirits run away at his name; illness and pain disappear for those who repeat it. He frees from trouble anyone who remembers him in thought, word and deed. His glory shines in all four ages.

Verses 31–40: his blessings. Mother Sita blessed him to be the giver of the eight siddhis and nine nidhis. He holds the essence of devotion to Rama. Through his worship one reaches Rama and forgets the sorrows of many births. Whoever reads this Chalisa a hundred times is freed from bondage; Lord Shiva himself is witness that whoever reads it is blessed. Tulsidas, forever the servant of Hari, asks Hanuman to make his home in his heart.

Closing doha. O son of the wind, remover of troubles, form of all that is auspicious, please live in our hearts together with Rama, Lakshmana and Sita.

How to recite the Hanuman Chalisa

  1. Bathe and sit calmly facing Hanuman ji’s picture or idol. Facing east or north is traditional, but not essential.
  2. Light a diya with ghee or til oil, and if you like, offer a red flower and a little sindoor.
  3. Remember your guru and Lord Rama for a moment. The Chalisa itself begins this way.
  4. Read slowly and clearly. It is better to read once with attention than many times in a hurry. Use the large Hindi text above, or the English letters if you are more comfortable with them.
  5. Finish with the Hanuman aarti and a quiet prayer for whatever is on your mind.

Benefits, as tradition describes them

Devotees have turned to the Chalisa for centuries for courage in fear, peace in illness, and strength in hard times. The verses themselves promise relief from trouble (sankat), from pain (peera) and from fear (dar). For many families, reading it together in the evening is simply a moment of calm that holds the day together.

Read it next to our guide to Lord Hanuman, which tells the stories the Chalisa refers to.

Frequently asked questions

Who wrote the Hanuman Chalisa?

The Hanuman Chalisa was written by Goswami Tulsidas, the 16th-century poet-saint who also wrote the Ramcharitmanas. It is composed in Awadhi, a dialect of Hindi, which is why some words look slightly different from modern Hindi.

Why is it called "Chalisa"?

Chalisa comes from chalis, meaning forty. The prayer has forty chaupais (four-part verses), with two dohas at the start and one at the end.

How many times should I read the Hanuman Chalisa?

Once a day with full attention is enough. On Tuesdays and Saturdays many people read it 7 or 11 times. The Chalisa itself mentions reading it a hundred times ("jo sat baar path kar koi"), which some devotees do on special occasions such as Hanuman Jayanti.

What is the best time to read the Hanuman Chalisa?

Early morning after a bath, or in the evening at the time of the diya, are the traditional times. There's no wrong time, though. Many people recite it whenever they feel afraid or before a journey or an important task.

Can women recite the Hanuman Chalisa?

Yes. The Hanuman Chalisa is a prayer for everyone. Women, men, children and elders all recite it at home and in temples.

How long does it take to read the Hanuman Chalisa?

At a steady, comfortable pace it takes about 8 to 10 minutes. Sung slowly with music it can take a little longer.
