The story of Hanuman’s birth

Anjana, an apsara born on earth under a curse, prayed long for a child together with her husband Kesari, king of the vanaras. At the same time, King Dasharatha of Ayodhya was performing the putrakameshti yagna for children, and Vayu, the wind god, carried a portion of the sacred payasam to Anjana. From it was born Hanuman, called Pavanputra, son of the wind, and Anjaneya, son of Anjana. As a child he leapt at the rising sun, thinking it a ripe fruit; Indra’s thunderbolt struck his jaw (hanu), giving him the name Hanuman, and the gods then blessed him with strength, wisdom and immortality.

How to celebrate Hanuman Jayanti at home

  1. Before sunrise: bathe and wear red or saffron. Hanuman is said to have been born at dawn, so the main puja is in the early morning.
  2. Set up his picture or idol with a picture of Shri Ram, Sita and Lakshmana beside it. Hanuman is worshipped with Rama.
  3. Offer sindoor mixed with jasmine oil (chola), a red cloth, red flowers, a tulsi garland, and bhog of boondi or besan laddoo, gur-chana and bananas.
  4. Recite the Hanuman Chalisa (11 or 108 times), the Bajrang Baan, or the whole Sundar Kand of the Ramcharitmanas.
  5. Aarti: “Aarti kije Hanuman Lala ki”, and end with the Ram stuti Shri Ramchandra Kripalu.
  6. Seva: feed monkeys, the poor or a Brahmin; many families hold a bhandara.

Frequently asked questions

When is Hanuman Jayanti in 2027?

Hanuman Jayanti 2027 is on Tuesday, 20 April 2027, the Chaitra Purnima. Purnima tithi begins at 6:08 AM on 19 April and ends at 3:57 AM on 21 April (New Delhi); it is the tithi at sunrise on 20 April, so most North Indian calendars keep the festival that day. Falling on a Tuesday, Hanuman's own day, makes it especially auspicious.

Why is Hanuman Jayanti celebrated twice a year?

Traditions differ. Most of North and West India celebrate Hanuman's birth on Chaitra Purnima. Many in North India also celebrate it on Kartik Krishna Chaturdashi, the day before Diwali. In Andhra Pradesh and Telangana it ends a 41-day deeksha on Vaishakha Krishna Dashami; in Tamil Nadu and Kerala it is Hanumath Jayanthi in the month of Margazhi (December–January); and in Odisha it is Pana Sankranti, the Odia New Year in mid-April.

Is it Hanuman Jayanti or Hanuman Janmotsav?

Both are used. Some devotees prefer "Janmotsav" (birth festival), since Hanuman is believed to be a Chiranjeevi who is still alive, and "Jayanti" is often used for those who have passed. In everyday use both names mean the same festival.

What is offered to Hanuman on Hanuman Jayanti?

Sindoor mixed with jasmine or til oil, a red chola, red flowers and a garland of tulsi or aak leaves, and bhog of boondi or besan laddoo, gur-chana, bananas and paan. Many devotees recite the Hanuman Chalisa 11 or 108 times, or the Sundar Kand.
