In Indian homes, Lakshmi is not only about money. She is the grace that makes a household prosperous in every sense: enough food, good health, harmony in the family and the peace of mind to enjoy them. That is why the first rupee earned, a new account book and even a newborn daughter are all lovingly called “Lakshmi”.
The story of Lakshmi
The Puranas tell that the devas and asuras once churned the ocean of milk to obtain amrit, the nectar of immortality. Among the treasures that rose from the waters was Lakshmi herself, radiant and seated on a lotus. She garlanded Lord Vishnu, and since then she has been his eternal consort, taking birth alongside him in each avatar: as Sita with Rama and as Rukmini with Krishna.
What her symbols mean
- The lotus: it grows from mud but stays clean, a reminder that true wealth is pure and unattached.
- Gold coins falling from her hand: the prosperity she showers on those who work honestly.
- Elephants pouring water: royal abundance and the rains that bring a good harvest (this form is Gaja Lakshmi).
- The owl: her vahana, a quiet warning that wealth without wisdom leaves one blind in the daylight.
How to worship Lakshmi at home
- On a Friday evening, clean the puja space and the doorway. Lakshmi is said to stay where there is cleanliness and light.
- Place her picture or idol with Ganesha on her left; he is always worshipped first.
- Offer a lotus or any red or pink flower, kumkum, rice, a coin and a sweet made with milk or rice.
- Light a ghee diya and chant ॐ श्रीं महालक्ष्म्यै नमः 108 times, or recite the Shri Suktam.
- Sing the aarti “Om Jai Lakshmi Mata” and keep the diya burning at the door.

Goddess Lakshmi: common questions
Which day is dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi?
Friday (Shukravar) is Lakshmi's day. Many women keep the Vaibhav Lakshmi or Santoshi Mata vrat on Fridays, and families light a ghee diya at the entrance in the evening to welcome her.
How was Lakshmi born?
According to the Puranas, Lakshmi rose from the Kshir Sagar, the ocean of milk, when the devas and asuras churned it together (the Samudra Manthan). She emerged seated on a lotus and chose Lord Vishnu as her consort.
Why is Lakshmi worshipped on Diwali?
Diwali falls on the Amavasya of Kartik, the darkest night of the month. Lakshmi is believed to visit homes that are clean, bright and welcoming, so families clean the house, draw rangoli, light lamps everywhere and perform Lakshmi Puja in the evening, usually with Ganesha.
What are the eight forms of Lakshmi?
The Ashta Lakshmi are Adi Lakshmi (the primal form), Dhana Lakshmi (wealth), Dhanya Lakshmi (grain and food), Gaja Lakshmi (royal power), Santana Lakshmi (children), Veera Lakshmi (courage), Vijaya Lakshmi (victory) and Vidya Lakshmi (knowledge).
