How the muhurat is worked out

Three things are traditionally combined for Diwali Lakshmi Puja, and the best time is when all three are true at once:

  1. Amavasya tithi. Lakshmi Puja is done on the new moon of Kartik. In 2026, Amavasya begins at Sun, 8 Nov, 11:28 am and lasts the whole evening of 8 November.
  2. Pradosh Kaal. The first part of the night after sunset, a fifth of the night's length (about two and a half hours). This is the main time for Diwali puja.
  3. Sthir lagna. A fixed (sthir) rising sign is chosen so that Lakshmi stays in the home. On Diwali evening that sign is Vrishabha (Taurus), which rises soon after sunset and lasts about two hours.

Where all three overlap is the Lakshmi Puja muhurat in the first table. Families who worship Lakshmi or Kali at midnight use Nishita Kaal, the muhurta around the middle of the night, ideally within Simha lagna, the other fixed sign.

We checked this method against Diwali 2024 in New Delhi: it gives a Vrishabha lagna of 6:20–8:16 PM and an Amavasya end of 6:17 PM, matching the published panchang to within a minute.

A simple plan for the evening

  1. Before sunset: finish cleaning, make the rangoli, set up the chowki with Ganesha and Lakshmi, the kalash, diyas and samagri.
  2. At the start of the muhurat: light the main ghee diya, take the sankalp, and worship Ganesha first, then Lakshmi, as in our step-by-step Diwali puja vidhi.
  3. Within the muhurat: sing the Ganesh aarti and Om Jai Lakshmi Mata, then light diyas around the house from the main lamp.
  4. After the puja: share prasad and sweets. Keep the main diya burning through the night if you can.

If the muhurat doesn't suit your family (work, travel, or elders who tire early), do the puja anywhere in Pradosh Kaal while Amavasya lasts. Every family's devotion is welcome to Lakshmi; the muhurat is a blessing, not a test.

Diwali muhurat: common questions

What is the Lakshmi Puja muhurat on Diwali 2026?

In New Delhi, the Lakshmi Puja muhurat on Sunday, 8 November 2026 is 5:55 PM – 7:51 PM (1 hr 56 min). It is the time when Pradosh Kaal, the fixed Vrishabha lagna and Amavasya tithi all overlap. Times differ by city: Mumbai 6:28 PM – 8:28 PM, Kolkata 5:21 PM – 7:19 PM, Chennai 6:08 PM – 8:09 PM.

Why is Vrishabha lagna chosen for Lakshmi Puja?

Vrishabha (Taurus) is a sthir, or fixed, lagna. Worshipping Lakshmi in a fixed ascendant is believed to make her stay (sthir) in the home, rather than come and go. Simha, the other fixed sign that rises at night, is used for the midnight Nishita puja.

What if I cannot do the puja in the muhurat?

Do it at any time during Pradosh Kaal (from sunset for about two and a half hours) while Amavasya lasts; that is the traditional window for Diwali puja. Devotion matters more than the minute. If you must do it later, the Nishita Kaal around midnight is also auspicious.

When is Amavasya on Diwali 2026?

Kartik Amavasya runs from Sun, 8 Nov, 11:28 am to Mon, 9 Nov, 12:31 pm (New Delhi). So the whole evening of 8 November falls within Amavasya, and Diwali Lakshmi Puja is on Sunday, 8 November 2026.

What is the Dhanteras puja muhurat in 2026?

Dhanteras is on Friday, 6 November 2026. In New Delhi the puja muhurat is 6:03 PM – 7:58 PM, when Pradosh Kaal, Vrishabha lagna and Trayodashi tithi overlap.
