Visiting a temple with elders

If you're planning a darshan with your parents or grandparents, a little planning makes all the difference. Most big temples are calmest in the first hour after they open and in the early afternoon, and busiest on the deity's special day (Monday for Shiva, Tuesday for Hanuman, Thursday for Vishnu) and on festivals.

Many large temples now have separate queues or wheelchair help for senior citizens, but you usually have to ask for it at the entrance, so don't be shy about it. Carry very little, because phones and bags are often not allowed inside, and keep a copy of everyone's ID handy.

On each temple page we try to tell you the things we'd want to know ourselves: when to go, how to reach, what to wear, and where an older person can sit and rest. Planning a longer pilgrimage? Start with our guide to the 12 Jyotirlingas.

We add temples slowly, after checking the details. If your family's favourite temple is missing, tell us about it.
