What Sade Sati is
Saadhe saat means seven and a half. Saturn moves slowly, spending about two and a half years in each rashi, and Sade Sati is the stretch when it passes over three signs in a row: the one before your Moon sign, your Moon sign, and the one after. Three times two and a half gives seven and a half years.
It’s counted from your Moon sign, not your Sun sign or lagna. That’s why the first question any astrologer asks is “what’s your rashi?” If you don’t know it, the rashi calculator will tell you in a few seconds.
The three phases
- Rising phase (12th from the Moon). Often described as a time of expenses, travel and restlessness, when old arrangements start to shift.
- Peak phase (over the Moon). Saturn sits on the Moon itself, the mind, and this is when people most often report feeling tested: pressure at work, tiredness, decisions that won’t be rushed.
- Setting phase (2nd from the Moon). Associated with family, money and speech. Many find this the phase where effort from the earlier years finally starts to pay.
Why Saturn is feared, and why that’s only half the story
Shani is the planet of time, work, patience and consequence. His reputation comes from the fact that he doesn’t hurry and doesn’t do favours. But in the tradition he is also the great teacher and a strict judge who rewards honest effort. Plenty of people remember their Sade Sati as the years they grew up, built something lasting, or learned who their real friends were.
How it plays out for you depends on the rest of your chart: where Saturn sits at birth, which dasha you are running, and the strength of your Moon. That’s something only a proper reading can say.
What families traditionally do
Nothing on this list costs much, and none of it needs a middleman:
- Recite the Hanuman Chalisa, especially on Saturdays. Hanuman is said to have freed Shani from Ravana, and Shani promised not to trouble his devotees.
- Light a mustard-oil diya under a peepal tree on Saturday evening.
- Give to people who work with their hands, and to the elderly. Saturn rules both.
- Keep your own habits steady: work honestly, keep your word, be patient. That’s the “remedy” Saturn is said to like most.

Frequently asked questions
Which rashis are under Sade Sati now?
Saturn is currently in Meena, so Sade Sati is running for Kumbha, Meena, Mesha. For Kumbha it is the first (rising) phase, for Meena the peak, and for Mesha the last (setting) phase.
How is Sade Sati calculated?
Sade Sati is the period when Saturn passes through the rashi before your Moon sign, your Moon sign itself, and the one after. Saturn takes about two and a half years for each, so the three together last roughly seven and a half years (saadhe saat).
How many times does Sade Sati come in a life?
Saturn goes round the zodiac in about 29½ years, so Sade Sati comes back roughly every 30 years. Most people meet it two or three times in a lifetime.
What is Shani Dhaiya?
Dhaiya (two and a half) is Saturn’s transit through the 4th or the 8th sign from your Moon. It lasts about two and a half years and is sometimes called small panoti. The calculator shows these periods too.
Is Sade Sati always bad?
No. It’s known as a demanding period of hard work, responsibility and slow results, but many people build careers, marry and buy homes during it. Saturn is also the planet of discipline and fairness, and its effects depend on the whole chart.
