What guna milan measures

Guna milan, or Ashtakoot milan, is the matching method most North Indian families mean when they say “kundli milao”. It compares the Moon in the two charts, specifically each person’s rashi and nakshatra, under eight headings called kootas. Each koota carries a different weight, and together they add up to 36:

KootaPointsWhat it looks at
Varna1Temperament and outlook on duty
Vashya2Mutual attraction and influence
Tara3Fortune and wellbeing
Yoni4Physical compatibility
Graha Maitri5Friendship between Moon-sign lords
Gana6Nature and temperament
Bhakoot7Family welfare and prosperity
Nadi8Health and children
Total36

Notice the weights climb. Varna, the lightest, is worth one point; Nadi, the heaviest, is worth eight. That’s why two couples with the same total can be quite different: 26 points with Nadi intact is read very differently from 26 points with Nadi at zero.

How to read your score

  • Below 18: traditionally not recommended without a closer look at both charts.
  • 18 to 24: acceptable. Most arranged marriages in India fall somewhere here.
  • 25 to 32: a good match on the Moon.
  • 33 to 36: excellent, and rare.

Here’s something worth knowing: two people with exactly the same nakshatra and pada get 28, not 36, because Nadi gives zero when the nadis are the same. So a “perfect” score doesn’t mean the two charts are identical; it means they complement each other.

Nadi and Bhakoot: the two that worry families

When a pandit frowns over a match, it’s usually one of these. Nadi dosha means both people share a nadi and lose all 8 points; Bhakoot dosha means the Moon signs sit 2-12, 5-9 or 6-8 apart and lose all 7.

What’s often left out is that the classical texts themselves list exceptions. Nadi dosha is widely held not to apply when the two share a rashi but not a nakshatra, or a nakshatra but not a rashi. Bhakoot dosha is commonly set aside when both Moon signs have the same lord, or lords who are friends. We point these out in your result where they apply, but please treat them as a reason to talk to a knowledgeable astrologer, not as a final ruling either way.

What this calculator does, and doesn’t

It does the Ashtakoot arithmetic carefully, with the tables used in most North Indian panchangs, and it places the Moon with the Lahiri ayanamsa using real astronomy. Scores from different websites can differ by half a point or so because a few tables (Vashya especially) vary between traditions.

It doesn’t read the whole chart. Mangal dosha, the seventh house, and the dashas both people will be running all matter to a traditional astrologer. And none of it replaces what the two people and their families think of each other.

South Indian families often use Dasha Porutham (ten poruthams) instead of the 36-point system. This calculator does the 36-point North Indian method.

Frequently asked questions

How many gunas should match for marriage?

Traditionally, 18 out of 36 is the minimum most families look for. 18 to 24 is considered average, 25 to 32 good, and above 32 very good. But the score is only one part of matching, and many astrologers look at Nadi and Bhakoot, Mangal dosha and the full charts before giving an opinion.

Can we do kundli milan without birth time?

Yes. Guna milan uses only the Moon’s rashi and nakshatra, and on most days those are the same from morning to night. If you know each person’s nakshatra from an existing kundli, choose “I know the nakshatra” and you don’t need birth details at all.

What is Nadi dosha?

Nadi dosha is when both people have the same nadi (Aadi, Madhya or Antya), which gives 0 out of 8 in that koota. It is taken seriously in North India, but the classical texts also list exceptions, for example when both share the same rashi but different nakshatras, or the same nakshatra but different rashis.

What is Bhakoot dosha?

Bhakoot looks at how far apart the two Moon signs are. If they are 2-12, 5-9 or 6-8 places apart, Bhakoot gives 0 of 7 points. It is commonly considered cancelled when both Moon signs have the same lord, or lords that are friends.

Is a low guna score a reason to reject a match?

On its own, many astrologers would say no. The score is a quick screen based on the Moon alone. Temperament, values, family and the couple’s own wishes matter a great deal, and a careful astrologer reads the full charts rather than a single number.
