Two numbers from one date
Indian numerology, ank jyotish, starts with two numbers you can work out on the back of an envelope. Your mulank comes from the day of the month you were born. Your bhagyank comes from the entire date. Each is reduced to a single digit from 1 to 9, and each digit belongs to one of the nine grahas.
People often use the mulank to talk about personality (“she’s a 1, of course she likes to lead”) and the bhagyank for the larger pattern of life. Many families also look at them when choosing a date for a wedding or a shop opening, or a spelling for a new business name.
Working it out by hand
Take 29 August 1985.
- Mulank: the day is 29. 2 + 9 = 11, and 1 + 1 = 2. Mulank 2, the Moon.
- Bhagyank: 2 + 9 + 0 + 8 + 1 + 9 + 8 + 5 = 42, and 4 + 2 = 6. Bhagyank 6, Venus.
That’s all there is to the arithmetic. The calculator shows its working the same way so you can check it.

The Lo Shu grid
The Lo Shu is a magic square said to have first appeared on the shell of a turtle rising from the river Luo in ancient China. It found its way into Indian numerology and Vastu, and you’ll now see it in almost every numerology consultation. The numbers 1 to 9 sit in a fixed pattern (4 9 2 / 3 5 7 / 8 1 6) so that every line adds to 15.
To read your grid, the digits of your birth date are written into their squares, and here we add your mulank and bhagyank as well, as many practitioners do. A number that appears more than once is read as an emphasis; an empty square as something you have to consciously build. It’s a lovely thing to fill in with children, who enjoy seeing their birthday turn into a pattern.
A word on how seriously to take it
Numerology is a tradition and a way of reflecting, not a science, and we present it in that spirit. If a number feels meaningful to you, wonderful. If someone tells you to change your name’s spelling, your house number and your phone number all at once, for a fee, it’s fine to say no thank you.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate my mulank?
Add the digits of the day you were born until one digit is left. Born on the 29th? 2 + 9 = 11, and 1 + 1 = 2, so your mulank is 2. If you were born on the 1st to the 9th, the day itself is your mulank.
How do I calculate my bhagyank?
Add every digit of your full date of birth and reduce it to one digit. For 29-08-1985: 2+9+0+8+1+9+8+5 = 42, and 4+2 = 6, so the bhagyank is 6.
What is the difference between mulank and bhagyank?
Mulank (the root or psychic number) comes from the day alone and is said to describe your nature and how you see yourself. Bhagyank (the destiny or life-path number) comes from the whole date and is said to describe the direction of your life.
What is a Lo Shu grid?
A 3×3 square of the numbers 1 to 9 arranged so every row, column and diagonal adds to 15. In numerology, the digits of your birth date are written into it; repeated numbers are read as strengths and empty squares as qualities to work on.
Which planet rules each number?
In Indian numerology: 1 Sun, 2 Moon, 3 Jupiter, 4 Rahu, 5 Mercury, 6 Venus, 7 Ketu, 8 Saturn, 9 Mars.
