First, take a breath
Few words cause as much worry in Indian homes as “Manglik”. Parents hear it and imagine a list of terrible things. So before anything else: roughly half of all people have Mars in one of the six houses the rule looks at. Six houses out of twelve, after all. Being Manglik is common, it is not a curse, and millions of Manglik people have long, happy marriages.
What the rule actually says
Mars (Mangal) is the planet of energy, courage and heat. The idea behind Mangal dosha is that when Mars sits in certain houses of the chart, that heat spills into married life as impatience or conflict. The six houses are:
- 1st, the self and temperament
- 2nd, family and speech (used mainly in South India)
- 4th, home and peace of mind
- 7th, marriage and partnership
- 8th, longevity and shared fortunes
- 12th, sleep, expenses and loss
Houses are counted from the lagna, the sign rising at birth. Many astrologers also count from the Moon, and a few from Venus. The chart on this page shows your houses counted from the lagna when you give a birth time, and from the Moon when you don’t.
The exceptions (there are many)
The same texts that describe Mangal dosha also list ways it is cancelled or softened. The most commonly cited:
- Mars in its own signs, Mesha or Vrishchika, or exalted in Makara.
- Both partners Manglik: the “heat” is matched, so the dosha is held to balance out.
- Mars aspected by or joined with Jupiter, the great benefic.
- Certain sign-and-house combinations, which vary between traditions.
We check the first one for you automatically. The others need the whole chart and a thoughtful astrologer.
About remedies
The traditional remedies are simple and cost nothing: the Hanuman Chalisa, a Tuesday fast, a visit to a Hanuman temple, giving to those who need it. You may hear about “kumbh vivah” (a symbolic marriage to a pot or a peepal tree) before the real wedding; some families find it reassuring, others skip it.
What we’d gently warn against is fear-selling: anyone who tells you something terrible will happen unless you buy a particular gemstone or book a very expensive puja today. Our guide to choosing an astrologer says more.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if I am Manglik?
You are called Manglik when Mars sits in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house of your chart. Enter your birth date, time and place above; the calculator places Mars in your kundli and checks the houses from both the lagna and the Moon.
Is Manglik dosha checked from the lagna or the Moon?
Traditionally from the lagna first. Many astrologers also check from the Moon (and some from Venus), and consider the dosha stronger when it shows from more than one. We show both so you can see exactly where it comes from.
Does Mangal dosha end at 28?
This is a popular belief, and many families repeat it, but it isn’t a rule you’ll find applied the same way everywhere. Some astrologers say the effects soften with age; others don’t use the idea at all. Ask your own astrologer how they see it.
Can a Manglik marry a non-Manglik?
Many do, and happily. The common guidance is that the dosha is balanced when both partners are Manglik, and that several placements cancel it, such as Mars in its own sign or in exaltation. A careful astrologer looks at the whole chart before saying anything about it.
What are the remedies for Manglik dosha?
Simple, traditional ones: reciting the Hanuman Chalisa, keeping the Tuesday fast, and visiting a Hanuman temple. Be careful of anyone who insists on an expensive puja or gemstone and uses fear to sell it.
