Kalki is the tenth and final avatar of Lord Vishnu, the one who is yet to come. The Puranas describe him appearing at the end of the Kali Yuga, the present dark age, riding a white horse and carrying a blazing sword, to end the reign of greed and cruelty and to begin a new Satya Yuga, the age of truth. Among the Dashavatara, he is the only one whose story lies in the future.

The ten avatars, and where Kalki fits

Whenever dharma declines, Vishnu descends. The ten principal avatars, the Dashavatara, are Matsya, Kurma, Varaha, Narasimha, Vamana, Parashurama, Rama, Krishna, Buddha (or Balarama in some lists) and Kalki. Many see in their order a journey from water to land, from animal to human, and from force to wisdom, with Kalki closing the great cycle. See the full list on our gods page.

What the scriptures say

The Bhagavata Purana (12.2) describes the end of Kali Yuga: rulers who plunder their people, wealth valued above virtue, truth and compassion almost lost. Then Vishnu will be born as Kalki in Shambhala, in the house of the noble Brahmin Vishnuyasha, and riding the swift horse Devadatta, sword in hand, will destroy the wicked. The minds of the people will become pure again, and the Satya Yuga will begin.

The Kalki Purana fills in his life: born to Vishnuyasha and Sumati on the twelfth day of the bright fortnight of Vaishakha, he learns the arts of war from Parashurama in the mountains, receives his horse and sword from Shiva, marries Padmavati of Simhala, and leads a great campaign against the forces of Kali.

When will Kalki come?

By the traditional reckoning, the four yugas last 1,728,000 (Satya), 1,296,000 (Treta), 864,000 (Dvapara) and 432,000 (Kali) years. Kali Yuga is held to have begun in 3102 BCE, when Krishna left the world. That means it has run a little over 5,000 years, and about 427,000 years remain before Kalki’s coming. Some spiritual teachers read these numbers symbolically, as stages of human consciousness, but the scriptures themselves place Kalki far ahead of us.

Kalki temples

  • Kalki temple, Jaipur: built in 1739 by Sawai Jai Singh II near the City Palace, with a marble horse awaiting its rider; local belief holds that a dent in the horse’s leg is slowly filling.
  • Shri Kalki Dham, Sambhal (Uttar Pradesh): Sambhal is identified by many with the Shambhala of the Puranas, and a large Kalki Dham is being built at nearby Achoda Kamboh.
  • Dashavatara panels in many temples, like the one in Guntur pictured above, show Kalki on his white horse.

What Kalki means for us now

Teachers often say the deeper message of Kalki is hope: however dark an age becomes, it does not last, and goodness returns. Each person’s small acts of truth and kindness are the Satya Yuga beginning in miniature.
