The story of Maa Mahagauri

After her long years of tapasya in the forest as Brahmacharini, Parvati’s body had grown dark with dust, sun and hardship. When Shiva finally accepted her, he bathed her in the waters of the Ganga, and she shone brilliantly fair, radiant as lightning. That glowing form is Mahagauri, “the greatly fair one”.

She stands for purity, peace and the washing away of past wrongs. Because she is the goddess after the struggle, when effort has borne fruit, she is worshipped with great joy on Durga Ashtami, one of the most important days of Navratri.

Her form and what it means

She is radiantly white, like the conch, the moon and the jasmine flower, and dressed in white. She rides a white bull, holds a trident and a damru, and her other hands grant fearlessness and blessings.

Day eight is about purity and grace after effort. Mahagauri is prayed to for forgiveness of past mistakes, peace of mind and a happy married life.

Dhyana mantra

श्वेते वृषे समारूढा श्वेताम्बरधरा शुचिः।
महागौरी शुभं दद्यान्महादेवप्रमोददा॥

May Mahagauri, pure, dressed in white and riding a white bull, who brings joy to Mahadeva, grant us what is good.

Durga Ashtami and kanya pujan

Monday, 19 October 2026 is Durga Ashtami (Ashtami tithi at sunrise, till 10:52 AM in New Delhi). Many families do kanya pujan today: nine young girls, and often a small boy as Langur, are welcomed as the goddess, their feet washed, a red thread tied and tilak applied, and they are served halwa, puri and kala chana. In Bengal it is Maha Ashtami, with the Sandhi Puja at the moment Ashtami ends and Navami begins, when 108 lamps and lotuses are offered.
